Douglas F. Roby papers, 1916-1992.

This collection is divided into six series: Personal/Biographical, Detroit Civic Activities, Sports Associations, Universities, Business and Photographs. Personal/Biographical contains information about the honors and awards that Roby received. Speeches and articles are included as are publications which mention him prominently. The Detroit Civic Activities series details Roby's civic activities for the city. Most prominently, the series contains material concerning the efforts to bring the Olympic games to Detroit. The Sports Associations series has information on Roby's leadership roles in the field of amateur athletics. Included is material concerning the Advisory Panel on International Athletics, Amateur Athletic Union, the International Olympic Committee, the Pan Am Games and the United States Olympic Committee. The Universities series contains material concerning Roby's relationship as a student, athlete and alumnus at the University of Michigan and Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. The bulk of this series concerns his relationship with the University of Michigan. The Business series concerns his career at American Metal Products in Detroit as well as his activities with Detroit based businesses First Federal Savings and Loan and Kelsey Hayes Wheel Company. The Photographs series includes images from throughout Roby's life. The bulk of the material concerns sports associations of which he was a member and sporting events that he helped plan such as the Olympic games.

Douglas Fergusson Roby was a member of the International Olympic Committee from 1952-1985 and president of the United States Olympic Committee from 1965 to 1969. He was elected president of the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States in 1951. Roby made several attempts to bring the Olympic games to Detroit from 1944 to the 1972 Olympiads.
